Members of the military sacrifice a lot for our country, including their bodies. Chronic pain, or pain that lasts for more than 12 weeks, is common among the approximately 20 million veterans in the United States today. More than 50% of veterans receiving care at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities across the country are affected by the condition.(Source)
Musculoskeletal pain, often caused by an injury to the bones, muscles, nerves, and/or connective tissue, is the most common chronic pain complaint among veterans. Between 2000 and 2011, approximately 5 million veterans (nearly 55% of VHA patients) were diagnosed with one or more musculoskeletal disorders. (Source)
SpineLife365 is a total spine wellness program. The program is incredibly innovative and offers an on-demand and wholistic approach to total spine wellness, including portals for nutrition, mental health, and fitness, with workouts tailored to all mobility levels.
“It seemed like an obvious way to give back to those who have given so much for us,” said Jay Resio, SpineNation’s founder and CEO. “I think it’s safe to say that just about every veteran probably has some type of back or neck issues. Between the rigorous physical training, the weight of the packs carried on their backs, and, in worst cases, traumatic injuries from combat, veterans, and active-duty military give their spines a heck of a workout.”
Beyond the physical rigor of serving in the Armed Forces is the toll it takes emotionally and psychologically, for many who serve. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Veteran suicide rates are two major concerns among veterans. In a report published and updated in September 2018, some of the data reported by the VA include the following:
- There were more than 6,000 Veteran suicides each year from 2008 to 2016.
- In 2016, the suicide rate was 1.5 times greater for Veterans than for non-Veteran adults.
- The suicide rate for Veterans ages 18–34 increased substantially, from 40.4 suicide deaths per 100,000 population in 2015 to 45 suicide deaths per 100,000 population in 2016.
How can SpineLife365 help
SpineLife365 has 5 pillars for care if you will: Lifestyle, Emotion, Function, Nutrition, and Recreation. The program is designed wholistically to address injuries or pain in the mind and body. Experts who are well-established and respected in their fields have joined Jay Resio and SpineNation in developing SpineLife365.
“Sometimes, the stigma of mental illness gets in the way of people getting the help that they need. Our hope is that veterans will take advantage of our program and receive some support that is private, taking place in their own home, and therefore free from scrutiny or perceived stigma,” Resio said.
Additionally, the fitness and education modules are offered on-demand and tailored to various degrees of function and immobility. A service like this has never existed before. Ultimately, the mission is to help individuals living with chronic back, neck, and spine conditions and chronic pain to live their best life.
